Performance Reel
Katarina performance reel from Anne Murray on Vimeo.
Katarina Rasic’s (Serbia and India) performances are raw investigations of cultural rejection and its role in the acceptance of an inner self. These works defy the notion of a separation between the artist and the work and exemplify the miraculous transformation of the artist, the viewer, and the work itself into a visceral experience of fear, anxiety, and release, all emotions entwined in the daily experience of being a foreigner living in the busy cultural world of Mumbai, India. In The Awaiting Kiss, Rasic presses her face against a window, lipstick marks show the kiss already posed, while the clown-like red stripes of her shirt and candy jar in hand, question what will happen and what will remain after the performance has ended.
In Cocoon, Rasic wraps garlands of yellow flowers around her body and then consumes the flowers, literally ingesting her art, while in Landscapes of the Sea, she lies down on the beach while she is decorated with sunscreen, allowing her body to be painted by the sun and the sea, tossed around indiscriminately by the influx of waves at high tide. Here Rasic allows herself to give in to culture, to be consumed by her environment, she lies as if dead on the sand.
